Argentina experienced crucial presidential elections on Sunday in which, once again, voters had to decide whether they would vote for a Kirchnerist profile so that he can lead the country for the next four years and, above all, try to redress the difficult economic situation that the country has been experiencing for several years and this with the current president, Alberto Fernándezgot worse.
After the results of the first round, in the center of attention are the Kirchnerist Sergio Massa, Fernández’s successor, who obtained 37% of the votes and Javier Milei, the candidate of the populist right of the La Libertad Avanza party, who was the big surprise of last August’s primaries. The first has the pressure of being the representative of the official line.
A life dedicated to politics
Indeed, all eyes are on Sergio Massa, the current Minister of the Economy. And although his line attracts thousands of citizens, his party, Union for the Fatherlanddid not obtain good results in the Primary, Open, Simultaneous and Compulsory Elections (PASO). In any case, he enjoys the support of important political figures, such as the current president but also vice-president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
Sergio Tomás Massa (San Martín, Buenos Aires, 1972) is son of Italian immigrants who settled in San Martín and started a construction company. He graduated in law and spent a good part of his life linked to politics. Local media say that as a teenager he began imitating speeches he saw on television. In 2001, he married Malena Galmarini, thanks to his in-laws, Peronist leaders, with whom he had two children.
At 51, the lawyer has always been closely linked to politics and in the 90s he was already active in several parties. At the same time, while he was not yet 30 years old, he had already important positions in the administration National Social Security, of which he was executive director between 2002 and 2007, in addition to being mayor of Tigre between 2007 and 2013. In addition, for a year and thanks to his political profile, he was chief of staff of Cristina Fernández .
In 2013, disenchanted with Kirchnerism to which he has now returned, founded the Renewal Front, a force with which he entered the Chamber of Deputies. But in 2019, his party joined Unión por la Patria, the progressive political coalition that won the last presidential elections. He began to be a very visible face when in July 2022, in the midst of a deep economic crisis, he took the reins of the Ministry of the Economy.
Sergio Massa’s future in politics
His political career will be marked, at least until now, by the exorbitant sums rising inflation year on year, by more than 100%, a percentage that has not been recorded since 1990, despite the fact that the country is already accustomed to economic turbulence.
Personal life of Sergio Massa
More personally, we know that Massa is a football fan and above all the Club Atlético Tigre, a municipality to which he feels very connected. He was a goalkeeper, not a professional, and it is common to see him in a stadium with his son excited about a good match. In addition, it is known that the presidential candidate is a good friend of Juan Román Riquelme, the idol of Boca Juniors and who played for Barça and Vila-real.
